Weeping for the Shrines of Timbuktu

Source: FT

Where is the Arab League to fight these war crimes? Where are the Gulf States that voraciously buy up Islamic art but font du lard when Islamic shrines and mosques are under fire? Militant Islamists are reported to have destroyed several relics so far, including the world famous Sidi Yahya, considered one of Timbuktu’s three great mosques. That mosque was built ~1400 and is part of the city’s history as one of the centers of Islam in Africa during the 15th and 16th centuries, earning Timbuktu the nickname of the “City of 333 Saints.” – WTF?

(BTW, Tempe has had a sister city partnership with Timbuktu since 1991)

“The Broccoli Horrible” and the Affordable Care Act

TLMW points out an article commenting on the recent Supreme Court ruling that had some raise the question what would stop a government that can make you buy health insurance from also making you buy healthy vegetables? Anyway, and of more supreme importance here, the article also includes THE recipes to prepare actually edible broccoli even for those by and large not terribly keen on it.

[…] Broccoli is a bad thing only when it is badly done. The truth is that broccoli should always be either roasted or pureed, in the French style, and is so delicious done either way that, if you tasted it, you would not just tolerate but demand government-mandated broccoli.

More cooking details at the link above. Update: my mother made the roasted version and loved it!

Time for Ostraconophobia?

Day 4 with massive, full body allergic reaction to mussels – borderline anaphylaxis. Most likely aggravated by several iodine injections for CT with contrast last week. Left ear turned deaf with severe angioedema and swelling up to twice its normal size. Right ear at ~20%. Required epinephrine shot.Urticaria (or hives) only now slowly receding. Less itching than in previous days. Back to some sleeping and less scratching. D#2 suggested patting instead of scratching. Worked better, but hard to discipline myself. Prednisone sending BS into nose-spin. Leprous rash on arms almost gone. First day for short sleeves again. D#1 now down with nasty sun burn on belly. Been some vacation – gone in a rash.

What Really Makes us Fat?

This article covers recent research in The Journal of the American Medical Association suggesting

that among the bad decisions we can make to maintain our weight is exactly what the government and medical organizations like the American Heart Association have been telling us to do: eat low-fat, carbohydrate-rich diets, even if those diets include whole grains and fruits and vegetables.

I guess it’s back to the lion and rabbit diet … Another factor to consider, as TLMW points out, is that gut flora can be associated with obesity which may offer ways to help control food intake.

Alonso Cueto – The Blue Hour (La hora azul)

Done reading.

Fantastic novel about a lawyer in Lima who uncovers his father’s brutal story as a high colonel in the Peruvian Armed Forces. About the country’s recent sordid past and the struggle against the Sendero Luminoso in the 1980s. Named for the hour of first light, this is a sweeping novel about a flawed but in the end sympathetic character (“I felt like a puppet of myself”) and his search for his deceased father’s story, his own family, a mysterious woman from Ayacucho, and ultimately himself. Part history lesson, part love story. Deeply moving and hard to put down. One of the better books to come out (in translation) this year. I got my copy from Amazon UK.

One review is here.

The book contains this short story that the main character wrote at some point:

Cueto has a way with picturesque descriptions. A small sample:

They’ll recognise me or my wife Claudia. My wife Claudia. It feels strange calling her that as though she was a stranger. The arc of her name reminds me of a rainbow – at least that’s what I told her last night.

[His wife’s aunt] liked to wear flowery dresses; she seemed determind to wear fabrics that represented all the gardens, forests and jungles of the world. She had dresses with creepers, lianas, bunches of flowers, grasses, but also tigers, butterflies and horses. I sometimes felt as though you could put on a hat, fill a water bottle, pay the entrance fee and step inside her dress for a safari. […]

As we were having coffee, I moved my hand too quickly and knocked the cup all over [her] dress. She threw up her hands and gave a shriek. The flower-print dress was streaked with coffee like dirt tracks through the forest. […]

‘It’s perfect,’ I said, pointing to her dress. ‘A perfect little path to go for a walk in the countryside, don’t you think?’ Then I bent down with a napkin to wipe her dress, but couldn’t stop myself from saying aloud, ‘If you didn’t wear dresses that make you look like a deranged parrot, I wouldn’t have been distracted.’ As I said it, I saw the words hang in the air, like a trail of red letters over the astonished company, and they seemed so alien to me I didn’t say anything more.

In winter, Lima takes the concept of misery to its highest level. […] Objects have no form. The sea is the sky. The ground is the air. The color of winter is not grey, it is the absence of color. Lima in winter might be said to be the grandeur of desolation. For all things that exist, Lima exalts towards nothingness.

Nashty Suns Set

Ouch:

You know what they say. If you can’t have the two-time MVP and franchise player, make sure you spend $14.5 million every year for Goran Dragic and Michael Beasley.

Drumroll, please:

As it stands, the Suns are committing medium-size, medium-term money to be a lottery team with poor chances at winning the lottery.

Bonus Memory – Best Nash-related line while playing for the Suns:

Steve Nash looks like a hummingbird trapped inside a sandwich bag.

(ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz commenting on the new defense installed under Terry Porter when Nash had to play with The Big Cactus.

Nature’s Meaning of ‘Giving Head’

Source: New Scientist

Male priapiumfish don’t have a penis like humans and other mammals. Instead they have a unique organ called a priapium, which faces backwards and looks like a muscular nozzle. It’s actually a modification of the fish’s pectoral and pelvic fins so that their reproductive organs appear on their chins, just behind their mouths.

Best Literary Reference During Euro 2012

Best paragraph written by a journalist covering the Euro 2012 this year:

Mario Gomez is a baffling footballer. There is a short story co-written by Jorge Luís Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares called “Esse est percipi”, in which the authors imagine that the Argentinian football that supposedly drew huge crowds in the 1930s didn’t really happen. Instead, it was cleverly scripted and performed by a radio commentator. The matches were simply fabrications. Likewise, there are some players who — upon viewing them — perform so radically different than their reputations that it makes fans wonder whether their careers were made up. And Mario Gomez was always one of them.

The four-page story is one of the sly and ironic essays in the Chronicles of Bustos Domecq and among the most esoteric literary references I have ever seen in an article on el jogo bonito. And, to boot, apt in this case.

Däumlinchen Dolls

Taken a few years ago at Spielmuseum Soltau in Germany.

These two dolls are apparently variations of so-called Däumlinchen Dolls which have been produced in the Käthe Kruse workshops in Donauwörth (Bavaria, Germany) since ~1957. Däumlinchen dolls generally stand 10 in. tall with a wire skeleton giving the dolls great flexibility, a soft foam head, hand painted facial features, and real hair wigs styled with much care to detail. They are based on designs made by Hanne Kruse, one of Käthe Kruse’s daughters.

For obvious sociocultural reasons, these black Däumlinchen dolls are exceedingly rare.
